11th August, 2007: Morning Walk

We were pleased to see about 200 people gather at the Jalan E5 Playground as early as 7.45am to show their support to the campaign against the proposed development on Taman Melawati Hill. Many supporters signed up and some pledged contributions to cover financial needs such as legal assistance.

There were young people and children and many senior citizens including a 72 year old lady wih a walking stick! We brought our banners and posters displaying slogans like "Save Our Green Lung" and "Selamatkan Bukit di Taman Melawati, Phase 3". The Chairman of the Protem committee Datuk Wahid gave a welcoming address and updated the crowd on our activities including the setting up of our website.

Shortly after 8 am, the crowd made their way up the hill via Jalan G-1 with banners and posters chanting "Save the Hill, Save the Hill!". At the gate entrance to the hill we were joined by another group of walkers. At the top of the hill the crowd admired the spectacular view of the main range and after catching our breaths, many joined in the tai-chi exercises led by Mr. Eric Ng. A few members of the crowd were then interviewed by the press. This event received coverage from Nanyang, China Press, Shin Chew Jit Poh and was also aired on TV3's Bulletin Utama. Many appealed to the authorities to gazette the hill as a Green lung.

As we made our way down the hill, we lamented that development should not make our beloved and precious green lung in Melawati a place that only a few who could afford. The greenery on the hill should be maintained and always accessible for the public to appreciate and enjoy.
