Taman Melawati Hill
by Chan Yoon Mae

Hi there,

I was reading today's paper and saw the event highlight of the resident's association, and there was a mention about saving the Melawati Hill. I went to the website and was horrified at what has been happening.

But I must say I really am not sure where exactly the development is being done. I frequent Bukit Tabur pretty often (I really don't know if that's the correct name but that was what we refered it to be). It is a 4 hour hike along the ridges and you see the dam, and the university- a wonderful hiking trail. Is that the same hill as the Melawati Hill?

I applaud your efforts in saving the hill and I will pass this message around in hope of gaining more awareness of the campaign. Well done and keep up the good work!

by Dianne Fenwick
Sadly I cannot join you good people on 23rd Feb 2008 as I am in UK and not in Taman Melawati. I wish everyone the Best of Luck and hopefully the council and the Good people of Malaysia will hear and listen to what the majority of people want "A Green Living Lung" to be saved for future generations. Good Luck Dianne Fenwick Beckenham Uk

Why must they do this-8 March is the Day
by Kiki
I'm the most dissapointed person in the community to hear this, even though i may not live there anymore but my heart still belongs to the surroundings, the ever green surroundings...pristine river, cold breeze of the jungle, That all going to be lost in the hand of What IJM, i;m no opposer to development cause i'm also a developer,... My Suggestion to all , is that the day is coming this March 8 2008, put back people power into place, We should use this opportunity to witheld representative whom is on our side...we shall not vote for destruction, if this message came across loudly, the to be elected rep. will feel if they going to win then the project should stop, i hope we guys can work this up as strategy. Illegal and indiscriminate open burning
by Kennedy Michael
Greetings to the Members of the this organisation. I have been a long time resident of Taman Melawati (since it was first opened). I wake up to a beautiful view every day and I am grateful for it. However, every day, I have to put up with smoke from open burning in Taman Melawati. And lately it has been more frequent and widespread. I am even seeing smoke coming from the hillsides of Bukit Tapur. It not only mars the beauty but pollutes the air and stinks out my home and laundry. Worse, every evening when I go for walks, instead of getting fresh air, I have to breathe in smoke. I have tried complaining to the DOE and the officers have come to investigate but no action has been taken against the perpetrators. It states on the DOE website that the fine for the offence of open burning is RM500,000.00 maximum per offence. I have even tried to talking to the perpetrators to ask them to put out the fires to no avail and on a few occasions I've had to put out the fires myself when they are accessible. It gets worse during the "haze" season. I am tired of this. I don't know what else to do. Any suggestions? Regards Kennedy

Save Bukit Taman Melawti
by Protect Nature
I am currently living in Sungai Petani,Kedah. I left KL after 25 years, especially Ampang after getting fed-up with the destruction of nature and with pollution of the urban and suburban settlements. Do not let Bukit Taman Melawati be another victim of development, there is no compromise, pressure the authorities to develop elsewhere. MPAJ has always been arrogant and insensitive to the very people it is paid to listen and support. Find legal loop-holes and use legal action in court to stop the development.

An Inconvenient Truth
by Ramana
PROGRESS, far from consisting in change, depends on retentiveness - Santayana Human beings will never understand or see actual progress unless we learn from the mistakes in our past.I hate to sound pessimistic but I was involved in the Bkt.Sungai Puteh issue in Ulu Langat which was highlighted in the local media and we collected more than 10,000signatures but all to no avail as today there's development and more houses than the eye can see. The State Minister was implicated in a case in Australia and we had sent in the ACA after them/state govt for alleged practices of flouting the EIA assessment. It will be tough & you need all the help, it is very difficult to understand unless it happens to you, this is a very common Malaysian disease, well it's happening all around us now, we see unplanned and totally chaotic development. I have found the answer and it is not with direct means of protests but with right education. I have seen it all - Bakun,Sg.Puteh and even the rape & plunder of Belum. While I applaud and support fully the action that you are taking, we must see the bigger picture. Malaysian values have changed drastically and no one cares about holistic development because the lure for material wealth has taken over any sense of surroundings or life. It is this that we have to change with the current generation. Maybe you would like to start an awareness in Melawati that could eventually lead to a movement which promotes holistic living with a balance and purpose? It is not easy fighting against the juggernaut that is development and is based on govt. servants conveniently hiding the truth because their salary depends on them not knowing the truth. This is the values that permeate our society today, that is why we do not have local council election and we have a government that has been in power perpetually. It is truly our fault for not recognizing the inconvenient truth. Thank you for highlighting the issue - wish you luck and maybe we can stop this development together...will be following the matter closely.

PLEASE stop the killing!
by Alene Jeyakumar
I have been away in England for 5 years now but have lived in Taman Melawati since 1980. Now when I go back to my parents home, each time there is less and less green. The hills screm red, the air is hotter, Taman Melawati is looking less and less homely. Please stop the cutting. Please stop destroying memories. It's not what I remember it to be anymore. I climbed those hills as a child with Daddy and Mummy. I climbed it with my husband last year. I'd like my children to climb them with me one day too.
